Uncommonly nasty..

As I was listening to Be for the trabillionth time I thought I heard something.

I listened to it over and over and even listened to it while reading the lyrics.

Common - Chi-City

I rap with the passion of Christ, nigga cross me (1)
Took it out of space and niggaz thought they lost me (2)
I'm back like a chiroprac' with b-boy survival rap
It ain't ninety-fo' (3) yo we can't go back
The game need a makeover
My man retired, I'ma takeover (4)
Tell these halftime (5) niggaz break's over

Does that look like a subliminal shot at God's Son to you?

1. Maybe the whole Hate Me Now thing with Diddy?
2. Nothing to do with the subject, I just thought it was funny he had a little go at Miss Badu.. or the way he was while with her kinda.
3. The year Illmatic dropped.
4. His man? Jigga? Takeover sounds right.
5. Halftime, a track on Illmatic.

Discuss!

p.s. Speaking of Common & Nas.. has anyone heard that mix of these two surpreme emcee's called Uncommonly Nasty? There's no new tracks that I know of, just wondering if it sounds any good?

Ether was insanely over-rated.

Agreed. Takeover > Ether IMO. That song also blew Mobb Deep off of the map.

this is just people looking to far into things. this isn't any stab at nas. thanks.

People being person.

And too far being... bleh.

Calm down...I was making an observation. And reading that it's not a stab at him from you really makes me think..

Of nothing really.

No probs!

There are too many references right there in those 7 bars for it to be a coincidence. I think you're on to something. Good ear!

*takes a bow*

It just caught my ear and thought it was interesting.

What the fuck? Those are hardly references. They're just some common words which also happen to be the titles of two completely unrelated songs by two artists who had beef, and a mention of an important year in rap when Nas' first album just so happened to drop.

If you really think this is actually a reference, you are RETARDED.

Common is known for extremely obscure metaphors and subliminal messages. I honestly would not be surprised if that's what this was.

Thank you.

These are the sort of responses I was after. You know, nice and easy e-conversation?

I knew I could count on you..

there was actually something similarly (is that a word?) written around the time Electric Circus came out..

he recited it on Def Poetry jam when he was on there..

i think this was a response to the negativity that ppl gave that album (and why), or it could be how heads percieve and complain about hiphop in general..

but honestly though he wouldn't be going on tour with Nas and trying to get him to do the Corner remix with him if he was trying to diss Nas

Another good response. Danke!

I still can't get past the Takeover and Halftime reference though!

I'm sure there's others.

I don't hate him but Be is over-rated, the only reason that album got any hype was because of Kanye, it's a good album, it'll probably be one of the best releases this year, but people speak on it as if it were a classic, it really isn't.

Whether you like him or not, you can't argue the fact that he is one of the most consious rappers out on the market right now

[info]zsong

May 31 2005, 20:14:27 UTC 6 years ago

despite the 'clues' you seem to have found, I don't think it's true simply because Common has no reason to diss Nas right now.

first of all, BE is a modern day classic imo.. you cant fuck with com's lyrics. it hasnt left my cd player in over 2 months.

now, i dont know if that's a diss for sure, but they beat that shit down to death in every hiphop forum there is. and plus, they are touring together this summer

[info]trustx

June 1 2005, 08:01:20 UTC 6 years ago

he is very abstract, maybe its not a diss.. maybe its just.. mentioning things that have happened?

[info]j_dopajerbee

June 1 2005, 11:49:55 UTC 6 years ago

i dont know if it's been mentioned, there's hella shit posted, i'm not tryin to read all of it.

but common and nas are going on tour together later this year, just fyi.

maybe common was referencing that cd ur talkin bout. i was listenin to it(the samples on that website) and it dont sound too hot to me. remixes by random dj's dont usually excite me, cuz their beats arent of the caliber of the originals. this is another like that

if common wasnt talkin bout that cd he was prolly just trynna namedrop like game, but since he does it so much better than game does it almost came off as a diss. i cant see common trynna dis nas, just cuz common is above dissin ppl. he didnt even want the beef wit ice cube if memory serves.
